Nautical Necessities:

New York Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2009

The Look:
“A modern, architectural look, the hair is slicked back with a deep side part. A ponytail is laced up and wrapped to create an architectural, modern version of a chignon.”

Get the Look/Step-by-Step:
Step 1: The show was divided by hair color: blonde, red or black.

Step 2: Apply Aveda Smooth Infusion Glossing Straightener (launching in July 2009) and blow dry to create smooth, shiny, straight hair.

Step 3: Create a low side part on the right side and draw the part across the head, behind the top of the ear, leaving the front panel of hair, from part to ear, free. Spray with Aveda Air Control Hair Spray and comb through using a fine tooth comb.

Step 4: Pull hair back tightly into a low slung ponytail, slightly off center to the left.

Step 5: Take the remaining front panel of hair and smooth back into the same pony to create a sleek, tight look. Spray with Aveda Air Control Hair Spray to minimize flyaways, maintain the look and add shine.

Step 6: Prep the ponytail with Aveda Smooth Infusion Glossing. Secure an elastic string (same color as hair) at the base of the pony and wrap the string down the length of the tail, criss-crossing in front and back, mimicking the wrapping of the collection’s boot strappings. At the bottom of hair, wrap the elastic string back up the pony and tie in place. Cut excess string.

Step 7: Wrap the bound ponytail into an architectural, square-shaped chignon on the left side of the head. Secure in place with hair pins and spray again with Aveda Air Control Hair Spray.

Q: What was your inspiration for this look? How did you collaborate with the designer to create the look?
“I wanted to create something wearable but unique for the modern, 2009 girl. The shapes are simple but the texture is complex. Like the collection, which plays with fabric and texture, the hair is sleek in front with an architectural, modern chignon in back.”

Q: How could a woman achieve this look on her own?
“This look can easily be varied. The front can be pulled back more loosely, and, while the wrapped ponytail can be achieved at home, you can also create a classic braid and wrap it into a chignon.”

Q: What is the inspiration for your collection? What is the look you are capturing?
“The collection is inspired by the concept of construction, and the work of artist, Gordon Matta-Clark, who deconstructed parts of abandoned buildings in the Seventies. We created a collage-like effect with a variety of fabrics that evoke the materials used to construct a house, such as gravel, cement, copper piping and insulation. In keeping with this theme of building and construction, we also worked with the idea of Frankenstein, exploring how things are pieced together.”

Q: This marks the fourth season that you have made a real effort to “green” your shows. How do you feel about this accomplishment?
“Each season, we are more inspired by Aveda’s commitment to the environment. When designing the set for our show, we wanted to recreate the cross section of a house and directed our designer to use all recycled or recyclable materials. The frame of the house was made of wood, the exposed insulation was created with wool, and chairs were covered in aluminum.”

BAFTA AFTER PARTY- SPONSORED GREY GOOSE

London based private members’ club Soho House and Grey Goose, the world’s favourite luxury vodka, today announced that they are teaming up to create a unique after party for this year’s Orange British Academy Film Awards on February 8th.

Set over two floors of Grosvenor House on Park Lane, the Soho House Grey Goose After Party will span a series of suites and spaces. This is the first time that this part of the hotel has been used for the official after party – a departure from The Ballroom which has traditionally been used for this event.

The Soho House production team, headed by Property Director Charlie Luxton, will transform the venue to create classic Soho House lounge spaces, evocative of their clubs in London and New York. The areas will be interactive and will include a poker room, a games room and music and DJs. The party will be fully staffed by Soho House with late night snacks created by their house chefs.

Partner Grey Goose vodka, who have worked with Soho House for a number of high profile international film based events, will create dedicated bars for the occasion serving a specially created collection of Grey Goose cocktails: Le Masque, Crème de la Crème and Goose Starlight, inspired by the glamour of cinema and using some of the finest, natural ingredients.

Nick Jones, Chairman, Soho House Group said today, “Soho House has a fantastic partnership with Grey Goose and has also enjoyed a long standing relationship with BAFTA, so we were delighted when the opportunity to work with everyone again arose. We are planning to create a party that really stands out as part of the evening of BAFTA celebrations.
