CITY STYLE AND LIVING MAGAZINE WINS 2 AWARDS INCLUDING THE BIGGEST AWARD OF THE EVENING "BEST OF SHOW" AT CTO AWARDS IN TORONTO

Just back from Toronto....and City Style and Living magazine has picked up two prestigious awards for "Best of Show" and "Best Article in a Consumer magazine" from the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO).

The annual Caribbean Tourism Organization Media Awards Luncheon, held on December 8, 2011 at the Novotel Toronto Centre gathered a crowd of nearly 100 media, industry members, national tourism organization representatives and Caribbean dignitaries attended the luncheon.

This event serves to recognize Canadian-based media that have captured the essence of the Caribbean in their story telling.

The prizes for Best Article in a Consumer Magazine, followed by Best in Show, were awarded to Kailash Maharaj and a team from City Style and Living magazine for their article ‘Paradise Found’, which ran in the Fall 2010 issue of City Style and Living.

Inspiration for this extensive article on Grenada came from a 2010 trip to the Island. Kailash and Shivana, co-editors in chief of City Style and Living magazine said,
“We are honoured and humbled by these two awards from the CTO. Grenada is an unparallel island not simply for the awe-inspiring views of Grand Anse, the lush tropical interior punctuated with cacao trees and nutmeg plantations, the convivial Gouyave fish fry and the world class splendour of Spice Island Beach Resort, but because Grenada evokes an unmistakable rush that you can only discover when you visit.”"

Thank you again to all of City Style and Living magazine's supporters.

5 QUESTIONS WITH GRENADA EXPLORER'S NEIL AND MONJA

Monja and Neil in Grenada. (courtesy Grenada Explorer)

1. Tell us a little bit about Grenada Explorer

We offer web design, hosting and internet marketing services, and that is
our primary business. [When we could not find any information on Grenada while searching the web] we decided to create a main database where we could consolidate all this information on the Internet, and which would be easily accessable to visitors. Our website is not only for the bigger companies and businesses on the island, however, but for everyone. Whether its someone who has a taxi service, guest house or a hotel chain, we show no favourites.

Please visit the following link for more about why we started
GrenadaExplorer.com.
www.grenadaexplorer.com/about.htm

2. Why is Grenada a great place to live?

The people are friendly, and helpful. The island itself has a little of everything - waterfalls, rivers, white and black sand beaches, deserted islands just a stones throw away.

Additionally, there is not the hustle and bustle associated with other places. Things still work on 'island time' here.

3. What are some gems in Grenada (things the average traveller should come for and perhaps some things they would not know about)?

The waterfalls, many of which are off the beaten track.
Hiking through the rain forest.
The diving and snorkeling. Grenada has some wonderful wrecks to dive, and many of them are within the range of regular divers.

4. What is your favourite experience on the island?

One of our favourite experiences on the island is Hashing and discovering places which are virtually unknown to most people. We have discovered more waterfalls and cascades than you would believe, and there are always little surprises waiting just around the corner.

5. What has been the most memorable hash to date?

Wow! That is a very long list to choose from. However, one of the most startling was quite recently when we were hashing up a stream and found our way blocked by a hollow in the hillside, which had a small waterfall in front of it. It was literally a case where you parted the branches of the vegetation in front of you and found that you were standing at the foot of a small waterfall.

JUST BACK FROM...GRENADA, WEST INDIES

An aerial shot of Grenada and surrounding Eastern Caribbean islands

CSL was lucky enough to sail (quite literally) this beautiful yacht

A rum tasting at Fish Friday in Gouyave. Careful, even the tiniest tasting of a few of these will have you light headed.

Rivers Rum- here, the cane sugar is processed

A heap of dried cane

The national flags flying in the wind

What else, but nutmeg, mace, bay leaves, cinnamon, allspice. No wonder Grenada is called the spice isle.

The Grenada chocolate company. Absolutely small scale production with an amazingly high quality chocolate

Bars, being wrapped by hand no less.

A view of the beach on Carriacou

CSL visited the islands of Grenada, Carriacou, and Hog Island in the Eastern Caribbean.

The gorgeous luxury hotel, The Spice Island Resort overlooking Grand Anse beach, was our base, and what a special place. CSL had dinner with a knight (Sir Royston Hopkin), owner of the property - a highlight of our stay.

Visiting Port Louis, CSL sailed on a yacht, even having a chance to steer (with an impromptu lesson from our fellow passengers (British Oyster yacht crew) - what an experience.

Other highlights of our trip included a visit to the Rivers Rum factory, The Grenada Chocolate Company, Belmont Estate, a hike to the Seven Sisters (waterfalls) with local Indiana Jones (Mr. Telfor Bedeau - a man of 70 years who did not break a sweat, while CSL was huffing and puffing); a city tour of St. George's, and much more.

Along the way we picked up a slew of fragrant spices (Grenada is the spice isle), and tasted some wonderful food.

Grenada is a unique destination with beautiful people, warm hospitality and a wealth of activities.
