APRIL IS EARTH MONTH

Our friends at Ojon sent us a package of "chocolate hoppers" from Tree frog coffees, which are made with rainforest alliance certified arabica cofffee beans. The tiny frogs are a cute and crunchy treat, helping a worthwhile cause.

"Ojon® is celebrating a commitment to environmental sustainability and preservation by donating 10 percent of Restorative Hair Treatment sales at Sephora stores across North America and online to the Rainforest Alliance. ". Ojon's restorative treatment has been a favourite of CSL for years, and an insider secret to repair dry, damaged hair; the ojon oil is a chocolately, musky scent that infuses hair with a light scent.

"The Rainforest Alliance is a non-profit group dedicated to promoting standards for sustainability that conserve wildlife and wildlands, while ensuring the wellbeing of workers and their communities. Ojon® continues working closely with the Rainforest Alliance towards Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification for the delicate harvesting process of Ojon® oil.

Rainforest 101

Helping to protect the world’s rainforests, and the people who live in harmony with them, continues to be a priority at Ojon®. Here are a few reasons why:

» Tropical rainforests are home to over half of the world’s species
» A typical four square mile patch of rainforest contains as many as 1,500 flowering plants, 750 species of trees, 400 species of birds and 150 species of butterflies
» Rainforests have given us chemicals to treat or cure inflammation, rheumatism, diabetes, muscle tension, surgical complications, malaria, heart conditions, skin diseases, arthritis, and glaucoma
» Nearly half of the Earth’s original forest cover has already been lost, and each year an additional 32 million acres are destroyed (a land area the size of Nicaragua or the State of Louisiana)
» The loss of our forests contributes to approximately 20 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions each year -- more than all the world’s trains, planes and automobiles combined
» Fifty-seven percent of the world’s forests, including most tropical forests, are located in developing countries
» Nearly 90 percent of the 1.2 billion people living in extreme poverty worldwide depend on forests for their livelihoods "

Happy earth month!

CHARCUT AND LE GERMAIN - CALGARY

The long anticipated grand opening of Charcut was Thursday March 4 2010 in Calgary. Complete with a green carpet (a 'carpet' of grass) to echo the philosophy of the property, the restaurant welcomed guests into a cozy, chic oasis.

Owners and Chefs John Jackson and Connie de Sousa put on a lavish spread for guests to enjoy including mortadella, bone marrow gratin, duck fat poutine and crispy chicken skin salad, sous chefs were busy in the kitchen cooking all evening.

Waiters carved meat tableside, and served up bountiful cocktails. Goody bags of saskatoon berry and no-bake cheesecake with cute vanilla shortbread (in the shape of pigs no less) - by pastry chef Cheryl Jane handed to guests upon exiting.

LE GERMAIN CALGARY OPENS

We were also given an exclusive tour of friends of CSLs' hotel- Le Germain Calgary, the newest boutique hotel here in the city of Calgary. (if you remember CSL featured Le Germain property Le Dominion in our Fall 2009 issue (http://www.citystyleandliving.com/Archive.html).

Though not completely finished (a spa is set to open later this year), the suites that we looked at are urban, chic and effortlessly comfortable.

Some great features of the superior room include spacious bathrooms, built-in ironing board, Nespresso machines, and water caraffes (thank you for thinking GREEN)!

We look forward to working more with our friends at both properties (and who knows...CSL might have some exciting developments for the future :))
