FORGET EVERYTHING YOU THOUGHT YOU KNEW ABOUT VODKA: ALLISON DEDIANKO GLOBAL AMBASSADOR FOR BELVEDERE VODKA VISITS CALGARY

The tasting of three of Belvedere Vodka's selections: (left to right): original, pink grapefruit, citrus

Belvedere Vodka and JustCocktails.org hosted a tasting at Candela Lounge in Calgary.  The theme that emerged was debunking common myths about vodka.  When first introduced to the North American market in the 1930s vodka was touted as an odourless, tasteless and colourless drink.  Since then, the industry has been working to erode this definition.  Vodka, which means little water, is any spirit that contains 96.5 per cent alcohol by volume.

Part of the super-premium category of vodka, Belvedere is distilled in Poland from Dandowski gold rye, usually reserved for baking.  With the emblematic Presendential Palace emblazoned on each acid etched glass bottle, Belvedere is "all about provenance - local water, rye and Polish pride," explained Philippe Grandbois who co-hosted the event.

Global Brand Ambassador, Allison Dedianko who won the Bartender's Dream Job Search, called vodka "the cowboy of the spirit world because it can be made in any country, with any raw material, and any amount of distillations."  The dynamic and friendly Dedianko (and one of the most engaging and approachable spirits Ambassadors we've met) spoke about the points of distinction that have made Belvedere a leader in the super premium category.  "We are an open book at Belvedere there are no smoke and mirrors - we did start the category.  We use a four column continuous still and only use a pot still for maceration.  Belvedere is quadruple distilled and for our macerated vodka we use real ingredients instead of compounds." The tasting included Belvedere Pure, Belvedere Citrus and Belvedere Pink Grapefruit.

Guests sipped vodka while nibbling olives, hummus featuring carrots, naan, ras-al-hanout chicken, balkan yogurt and short rib and desserts of gorgonzola ice cream with poached pear and brownies with pistachio ice cream.  With rosemary gimlets passed to guests and glasses raised in cheer Grandbois reminded guests that, "with vodka, unlike Scotch whiskey where you are in constant contact with the glass and spirit, you have to impress quickly."  And impress they did.

It was a packed house at Hotel Arts in Calgary, for CBC's Fall 2012/13 media preview.  Guests chatted with executives, actors and CBC personalities, which was then followed by a fantastic presentation (featuring George Stroumboulopoulos) for the new lineup of programming on CBC television and radio.

Here are some of the show's we're exited to see this Fall:

OVER THE RAINBOW: Debuting in September 2012,  the series documents the search for a new, undiscovered musical theatre performer to play the role of Dorothy in the Canadian premiere of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s new production of The Wizard of Oz. Each week, one participant will be eliminated until three remain in the final performance episode. The winning Dorothy, as chosen by viewers, will perform the role onstage at the Ed Mirvish Theatre in Toronto starting December 2012. Sundays and Mondays at 8 pm (8:30 NT).

CRACKED: Coming to CBC in January 2013,  this show is a one-hour drama series, inspired by the real life experiences of frontline police officers and mental-health workers. Starring David Sutcliffe (Gilmore Girls, Private Practice) as Detective-Sergeant Aidan Black, a seasoned officer dealing with post-traumatic
stress disorder, and Stefanie von Pfetten (Battlestar Galactica) as psychiatrist Dr. Daniella Ridley, together they investigate the most bizarre, baffling and downright odd crimes in the city.

TITANIC: BLOOD AND STEEL: Premiering in September 2012, this eight-part period drama chronicling the story of the Titanic, which gives viewers the chance to watch the legend unfold. While
everyone knows the story of the tragic sinking of the infamous ship on April 15, 1912, the story of the creation and the building of the world’s biggest ship is often forgotten. The cast is composed of high- calibre Canadian talent, with Neve Campbell (Party of Five, The Craft) playing the role of Joanna Yaeger and Kevin Zegers (Gossip Girl) playing the series star, Mark Muir. The series also stars Chris Noth (The Good Wife, Sex and the City, Law and Order) as JP Morgan and Derek Jacobi (Gladiator, The King’s
Speech) as Lord William Pirrie. Wednesdays at 9 pm (9:30 NT).

DO YOU MAKE CANADA'S BEST SANDWICH?

 Photography Ace Bakery

Put on an apron, slice up your favourite ACE Bakery bread and let your taste buds lead the way!  Chef Lynn Crawford and ACE Bakery today announced a search for the most sensational sandwich recipes this country has to offer through Canada's Best Sandwich Contest.  Better yet - the winner will be announced just in time to add the new recipe to your family's summer menu!

Canada's Best Sandwich Contest will be accepting recipes on the ACE Bakery website (acebakery.com) from now through May 24, 2012.  Submissions will then be reviewed by Chef Lynn Crawford and ACE Bakery and scored based on their taste appeal, creativity, innovation and originality.
"Experimenting in the kitchen is one of my all time favourite things to do," says Linda Haynes, ACE Bakery co-founder, and author of the ACE Bakery cookbooks.  "If you're new to creating recipes, sandwiches are a great place to start - simply choose a combination of fresh ingredients that you love and start building.  Also be sure to take risks, you never know what will taste great together!"

On June 4, one regional finalist from Western Canada (including British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba), Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada (including New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland) will be announced.  Each regional winner will be awarded a $1,000 cash prize, as well as a $1,000 donation to their charity of choice.

The regional winners will then be invited to Toronto to participate in the contest finals on June 22, where they will prepare their own recipes in front of a live audience.  Chef Lynn Crawford, Linda Haynes, and Marcus Mariathas, ACE Bakery's master baker, will judge the final creations and decide on the winning recipe.  The creator of the winning recipe will be awarded an additional $5,000 cash prize and $5,000 to donate to their charity of choice.

SPREAD THE LOVE FOR MOTHERS DAY WITH PIZZA 73

We love the heart shape, very cute and perfect for Mom!
 Photography K&S Media Copyright 2012

With Mother’s Day just around the corner, why not let Mom take the day off cooking?  Treat her with the Mother’s Day Delight Pizza.   From May 1 to 13, Pizza Pizza will offer the Mother’s Day Delight Pizza for $9.99 at its traditional restaurant locations across Canada.

The specialty pizza consists of Roma tomatoes, green peppers (or any two toppings) and 100 per cent mozzarella cheese on top of a whole grain or classic crust, in the shape of a heart.

We ordered a vegetarian, which came delivered to our door piping hot (from the 9620 Elbow Drive S.W. location in South Calgary) and was a welcome treat after a long week.  Safe to say it vanished within minutes.

Pizza 73 is also enticing customers with a 4-pack of red velvet cupcakes filled with cheesecake filling which they can add to their pizza order for $4.99.
