ROUGE AND WHITE CARNIVAL AT ROUGE CALGARY

Heather (Rouge), serves up caramel corn for the crowd.

Baruch, walked around on stilts, and entertained the crowd throughout the evening.

Corn Chowder, and pork tacos from Rouge.

Super talented Chef Derrick Dammann (DNA Montreal) plates his pork belly and pickled watermelon salad.

A closeup of Chef Dammann's dish.  This was one of CSL's favrourite dish of the evening, light, spicy, herbaceous, refreshing.  Summer personified.  Another highlight?  Rouge's own sauteed sweetbreads and carrot slaw, with mint.

A lively carnival atmosphere pervaded in Rouge Calgary's garden.  Chef Paul Rogalski played host to a "Rouge and White" event, which included a fortune teller, 'hula hooper', and magician/ stilt walker.

Intended to raise awareness for the Hotchkiss Brain Institute, showing support and bringing together people who have been affected by brain related illnesses or injuries, the lively party featured several local chefs including Chefs Connie DeSousa and John Jackson from Charcut, Chef de Cuisine JP Pedhirney, Chef Michael Allemeier, Chef Xavier Lacaze, and Chef Derrick Dammann.

SPREAD THE LOVE FOR MOTHERS DAY WITH PIZZA 73

We love the heart shape, very cute and perfect for Mom!
 Photography K&S Media Copyright 2012

With Mother’s Day just around the corner, why not let Mom take the day off cooking?  Treat her with the Mother’s Day Delight Pizza.   From May 1 to 13, Pizza Pizza will offer the Mother’s Day Delight Pizza for $9.99 at its traditional restaurant locations across Canada.

The specialty pizza consists of Roma tomatoes, green peppers (or any two toppings) and 100 per cent mozzarella cheese on top of a whole grain or classic crust, in the shape of a heart.

We ordered a vegetarian, which came delivered to our door piping hot (from the 9620 Elbow Drive S.W. location in South Calgary) and was a welcome treat after a long week.  Safe to say it vanished within minutes.

Pizza 73 is also enticing customers with a 4-pack of red velvet cupcakes filled with cheesecake filling which they can add to their pizza order for $4.99.

PATIO SEASON IS HERE: JOEY EAU CLAIRE

After an extensive renovation Joey Eau Claire has reopened

These huge tree trunks are featured as part of the new decor

The menu for the sneak peak party

Chefs Wallace and Stookes (perfect names for a comedy duo) and lovely guys

The chefs demonstrate how to make soy rolls with flying fish roe, daikon sprouts, rice and wasabi, and tempura shrimp

Instead of nori the rolls featured soy sheets made from the skin of soy milk (available online)

Specially made holders for the rolls feature the Joey logo and the ingredients for a roll

The completed rolls - each soy skin was a different colour - delicious

The beautifully constructed pizza/stone oven. The bricks were salvaged from cobblestone streets in the United States - the brick company's unique marking are still visible.

Recently renovated, Joey Eau Claire is the new kid in town. Rustic, modern decor (many pieces salvaged like the bricks in the kitchen and some of the tables. The space feel cozy, with a dark gray palette accented with wood. Reminiscent of an old farmhouse with wooden beam drop ceilings, stone detailing and leather seating, the space is warm and inviting.

Executive Chef Chris Mills greeted guests, who feasted on signature Joey menu options, like the lobster grilled cheese, tuna tacos and warm apple pie.

As always Summer cocktails and wine were on order, our favourites included the St. Germaine spritz and blueberry mojito with perfumed fresh fruit from the muddled berries. Another favourtie was the Sandhill (Okanagan) Cabernet Merlot, oaky, fruity and with smooth tannins this was a hit.

Interactive and friendly as always Chefs Wallace and Stookes taught CSL how to wrap our own take on a traditional tuna cone (this version was made from soy wrappers). Delicious, fresh and crunchy, this was one of the stars of the show and abundant with sticky rice, tempura shrimp, tobiko roe and vegetables.

The new Enomatic wine technology allows for more sampling by the glass, preserving the freshness of each bottle of wine (currently 14 wines are on this list). It was a focal point for the restaurant where guests gathered eagerly.

This is the new look of Joeys and we like it.

The team at GreatEvents put on a great event featuring the marriage of food and fashion (so apt to CSL). Guests nibbled on small bites inspired by Paris, Tokyo and Milan while sipping wine and cocktails. Food and fashion - quite the pairing.
